Series: The Daphne Cole Mysteries, Book 9
The Book: The Past Is Murder
Daphne Cole runs Novel Grounds, the bookstore café in Tansy Ridge, and a box of donated books is an ordinary Tuesday. Then Mooney, her enormous Old English Sheepdog, knocks one over, and out falls a purse that belonged to Laurel Mercer. Her car keys are still inside. Laurel vanished from Tansy Ridge twenty-five years ago.
The whole town remembers that night. Laurel's car was found near the bus stop, a witness saw her red coat heading out of town, and everyone agreed she had simply walked away. A few hours after the box arrives, Warren Doyle, the handyman who delivered it, is found dead at the bottom of his workshop stairs. Now Daphne has two mysteries, and Sheriff Mac Weaver, who has only just taken her on a first date, has his hands full.
Everyone has a version of the past to protect. Laurel's ex, Daniel Cross, lied about where he was the night she disappeared. Her cousin Rebecca Mercer inherited the family cottage and won't talk about their last argument. Even the eyewitness who saw the red coat isn't so sure anymore. Mooney, meanwhile, is mostly busy stealing food off customers' plates. Somebody wants the past left cold, and they're running out of patience with Daphne.
